12/16/2024 “Spraying Away Your Migraine Pain” By Kaylee McGrath

Opening Statement:

More than 39 million people in the United States suffer from migraines. For fast relief, nasal sprays have become a reliable treatment for many patients including myself. I have been suffering with migraines for almost 2-years now and I can definitely say that nasal sprays do work. For me, using nasal sprays along with my prescribed medications gives me the relief I need, and fast!

·       What is a Migraine

A migraine is a type of headache characterized by recurrent attacks of moderate to severe throbbing and pulsating pain on one side of the head. Often running in families, migraines can worsen with routine physical activity, movement, coughing or sneezing. Migraines tend to occur most often in the morning, especially when a person wakes up. Migraines may cause nausea, sensitivity to light or sound, confusion and other symptoms. They can last for hours or even days, and women are more than three times more likely to experience one than men.

·       Nasal Sprays Really Do Work

Nasal sprays or intranasal agents work well for individuals with chronic or episodic migraines. An Episodic Migraine is defined as zero to 14 headache days each month, while chronic migraines are characterized by 15 or more. “Nasal sprays can actually stop headaches before they begin,” stated by many neurologists and headache medicine specialists “They’re a great at-home remedy for unsuccessful or acute treatments” (as noted in printed medical publications).

·       Benefits and Side Effects

Although many individual patents use pills to relieve their migraine pain, listed are some reasons why some doctors believe a nasal spray may be right for you.

1.       Efficiency:

Sprays work faster because they’re absorbed quickly by the tissue that lines your nose. Pills must travel through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Sprays may bring relief in just 15 minutes, compared to 30 minutes with pills.

2.       Ease:

Some migraine patients may have gastroparesis, partial paralysis or weakness of the stomach, causing the entire GI system, along with digestion, to slow down. This can happen during and between acute migraine attacks and can negatively impact how the body absorbs migraine medications.

Closing Statement and Additional Information:

As all medications can have side effects, and migraine nasal sprays are no exception. It is very important to discuss these symptoms with your doctor if they occur:

1.       Unusual taste

2.       Nasal discomfort

3.       Dry mouth

4.       Tiredness

5.       Sore throat

6.       Nausea or vomiting

When it pertains to migraines, sometimes it takes a while to find the right combination of prescription migraine medications as well as nasal sprays, and alternating hot and cold compresses on your head and neck. Another good tip is resting in a dark cool room and eating saltine crackers in case you feel nauseous or vomit.
