As we welcome a New Year, a COVID-19 vaccine, better health conditions, and hopefully move on to normalcy I wanted to share some important health awareness, suggestions, and prevention for Women.
What are the top health issues and threats for women?
While reading several articles and conducting research on this subject, some of the top causes of death among adult women in the United States include heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease, stroke, Alzheimer's disease, and unintentional injuries (car accidents).
Other health disorders that can only affect women:
Turner Syndrome - is a rare chromosomal disorder in which a female is born with only one X chromosome.
Rett Syndrome - is a rare genetic mutation affecting brain development in females
Ovarian and Cervical Cancers
Other Issues related to women's overall health and wellness include:
Violence against women
Women with disabilities and their unique challenges
Osteoporosis, Bone Health, and Menopause
All women need to take control of their health and the specific illnesses and issues that are related to women. To accomplish this, you must have a doctor’s visit or a clinic visit at least once a year whether you are sick or just a wellness visit. Talk with your doctor or nurse practitioner about your risk factors, other matters that concern you, or just women issues in general. Then follow through with these important suggestions and start reducing your risk. For example, if your health care provider recommends various screenings such as a mammogram (breast cancer screening), pap smear (screening for cervical cancer), blood tests to determine high cholesterol and blood sugar (diabetes), and high blood pressure screenings (prevention for heart attacks) you must get these tests done.
Start Implementing a Healthier Lifestyle:
Everyone knows that you can't eliminate risk factors such as your family health history issues, however, you can control other risk factors for heart disease, stroke, and cancer.
Suggestions and Prevention:
Don't smoke or use other tobacco products, it’s that simple…. DON’T SMOKE. If you do smoke, ask your doctor for help to quit as soon as possible. Avoid exposure to secondhand smoke
Limit your alcohol intake
Maintain a healthy weight and if you are overweight, ask your doctor for advice to lose weight. Always let your healthcare provider know before starting a well-known publicized weight loss program as it may not be the best for you. If you are overweight, losing those extra pounds and keeping them off can lower your risk of heart disease as well as various types of cancer. If you are underweight, seek the advice from your doctor to try to gain some healthy and safe weight good for your height. Being underweight can cause health problems such as energy levels, nutrients to fight off infections, and feeling tired often
Exercise can help you control your weight and lower your risk of heart disease and stroke. Exercising might also lower your risk of certain types of cancer. Start slowly with walking a few times a week. Seek advice with other types of exercise before adding too much too soon. You need to add exercise slowly so that you do not cause damage to your body. The correct exercise is good for underweight women as well for health prevention
Manage your stress if you are experiencing various stress issues. Your lifestyle habits might suffer and possibly your immune system. Take steps to reduce stress or learn to deal with stress in healthy ways. You can start by asking your healthcare providers advice. Walking can clear your mind as well as different activities such as doing crafts or any creative activities. A healthy lifestyle might also play a role in preventing Alzheimer's disease
